Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 1, also referred to as Call of Duty: MW1 or simply MW1, is the eighth main installment in the Call of Duty series and the fifth developed by Infinity Ward. Serving as a sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it is the final entry in the Modern Warfare series.

Activision announced the title during pre-production on April 9, 2010, with a release date set for November 8, 2011. Initially, Sledgehammer Games was slated to collaborate with Infinity Ward on all aspects of the game’s development, replacing the canceled action-adventure project. Raven Software assisted with the user interface and downloadable content (DLC), as they had done with previous Call of Duty titles. DLC was released monthly for nine months and was provided free of charge to users of the Call of Duty ELITE Premium service. Sledgehammer Games assumed responsibility for the service without any issues, with over 95% of the objectives achieved.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 1 utilized an enhanced version of the IW 4.0 engine, dubbed the “MW1 engine,” instead of the previously planned “IW 5.0,” courtesy of Sledgehammer Games. Despite numerous leaks and speculations, including a tweet from Robert Bowling on May 13, 2011, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the game’s integrity, the official teaser trailers were released on the Call of Duty YouTube channel. These teasers showcased various locations, such as New York, London, Paris, and Berlin, with the full trailer unveiled on May 23, 2011, earlier than scheduled due to a leak.

A single-player trailer titled “Redemption” was published on August 7, 2011, offering a glimpse into the game’s storyline, which featured the return of Captain Price as he pursued Makarov. The launch of the trailer marked another milestone in the series, hailed as “another chapter in the global phenomenon” and dubbed “the most anticipated game in history.”
